New grant scheme from Children in Need

Last week Children in Need launched a new £3 million grants programme specifically targeted at disabled young people.

The programme is intended to enhance opportunities for disabled young people aged 12 – 18 to meet friends and have a good quality of life. It is hoped the scheme will empower and support young people with disabilities to establish independent social networks and become actively involved in leadership.

Funding worth up to £300,000 over a three-year period is available for fully constituted, not-for-profit organisations to carry out projects.

The deadline for submitting applications is Friday 31 July 2009.

New fund for young volunteers in Wales

The Welsh Assembly has opened a fund worth more than £400,000 to support youth volunteering and has promised to give young people a say on how it is spent.

The GwirVol Youth Volunteering Grants Scheme is provided by the Department for Social Justice and Local Government and administered by GwirVol, a diverse partnership of voluntary/community, public and private sector organisations that aims to promote, support and drive forward youth volunteering in Wales.

The programme is specifically designed for disadvantaged young people and is intended to encourage them to take up worthwhile volunteering posts. It is also hoped that the programme will support businesses and organisations to engage with young volunteers effectively.  A body entitled GwirForce, comprised of young volunteers from throughout Wales and supported by youth volunteer advisers from Welsh local authorities, will lead the grants programme and play a ‘hands on’ role.

The programme has two grant-making strands:

  • Opportunities’ project funding: grants of up to £10,000 for activities that will deliver a wide range of new and innovative volunteering experiences for young people aged 16 – 25.
  • Promotion’ project funding: grants of up to £5,000 to promote volunteering opportunities to and for young people aged 16 – 25, through events and workshops, websites, exhibitions or visits.

The closing date for applications is 30 June 2009.

Small charities to cash in!

This week Cabinet Minister Nick Byrne announced a funding pot of more than £750,000 for small local charities and voluntary organisations that work with vulnerable members of society and carry out campaigning initiatives.

The programme, which will be administered by third sector infrastructure body Capacitybuilders, will provide grants to up to 30 organisations over a period of two years.

The aim of this cash injection is to encourage small, locally-based groups that represent the most vulnerable people in society to make their voices heard.  Capacitybuilders are particularly keen to hear from organisations that work with people with disabilities and disadvantaged young people and have an innovative approach.

It is anticipated the grants programme will open to applications later this Spring.

New volunteering opportunities for young people

V, the youth volunteering charity, have this week launched a new funding programme to promote volunteering amongst disadvantaged young people.

The scheme, worth £10.5 million, is intended to encourage up to 1000 young people to volunteer full time through public sector placements at nurseries, play programmes and youth clubs.  Each participant will receive a maintenance grant to cover living costs and, once they have completed the course, a personal development grant of up to £1,500, to pay for further education or training.

It is anticipated that the programme will last for two years and will involve around 35 local authorities across England.  In keeping with their aim to target disadvantaged youths, v have stated that up to 40% of the placements must be given to young people not currently in employment or education.

Terry Ryall, v chief executive, explained that it is hoped the scheme will engage and inspire young people – possibly even drawing out “hidden talents that might otherwise go unnoticed”.

Young Roots programme seeks Merseyside projects!

The Heritage Lottery Fund’s Young Roots programme has reported a low uptake of applications from the Merseyside area and, as a result, is keen to encourage the submission of quality projects from the region.

The Young Roots programme is intended to encourage young people to become involved in heritage – at a local, regional and national level.  The scheme has been established to help youth groups work in partnership with heritage organisations in order to get more 13 – 25 year olds involved in heritage-related projects.

Eligible projects must be developed and maintained by young people and might include learning practical skills for conserving wildlife, setting up an archaeology club or researching and providing information on local historical and cultural traditions.  In addition, each project must also create new opportunities for volunteering or new opportunities to gain skills for the young people involved.

Grants of between £3,000 and £25,000 are available.

Interested individuals should complete an online Pre-Application Form.

Young Roots is a rolling programme and there are no deadlines for applications.  You will receive a decision on your application within ten weeks.

Young People’s Fund 2: Local Grants Deadline!

The deadline for the submission of outline proposals to the Big Lottery Young People’s Fund 2 (YPF 2) Local Grants Programme is nearly upon us.

The Local Grants programme, intended to compliment the YPF 2 National Grants scheme, will award funding to local voluntary and community groups across England  that are currently working towards increasing young people’s involvement in designing, running and reviewing the services they use regularly.

All proposed activities or projects must be youth-led from start to finish and make a difference to the lives of children aged 10 – 18 years.  Each project that receives a grant must have a local identity with obvious beneficial effects on a local community.  The fund is particularly keen to sponsor groups that work with vulnerable or disadvantaged young people.

The YPF, having secured £38 million for the Local Grants programme, is likely to award 100 grants of between £10,000 and £500,000 during this particular funding round.

The closing date for submitting an outline proposal is Thursday 16 October 2008.  If, following a successful outline proposal, applicants are invited to submit a full application they must do so before 2 February 2009.
